Cathy's Chatter

Hi,

My name is Cathy Braun and I am a grade one teacher at Border Valley School. Unfortunatley I had to miss the class on wikis due to illness. I wasn't the only one sick at our school. There were four subs in on Tuesday due to teachers being sick. My theory is this: since we have had such cold weather and have had to stay inside we have been breathing germs on each other and have had no chance to go outside and freeze those germs. Hopefully it will warm up soon. One website I use a lot is:

abcteach

I am really enjoying working with the photostory 3 program.  The students are amazed by it as well.

I'm thinking it will be a great tool to send my two year old grandson stories of Grandma and Grandpa and the rest of the family in Manitoba.  He lives in Greenwood, Nova Scotia at the moment and is moving to Comox, B.C. in April.  It will be a great way to keep in touch.

I have a couple of ideas that I would like to use in my classroom.  The first is the animal class photostory described below and the second is a photostory of the growth of plants where the students will grow a plant and take pictures of it as it grows.  Then they will put the pictures into a photostory of their own.

Tech College Assignment

Description:

  • We are currently working on our animal unit in science and so we will use that as our theme.  This will be the culminating activity and since this is our first attempt at this it will be a class photostory.

Cirricular Outcomes:

  • The students will have acquired knowledge of the characteristics and needs of animals.
  • The students will present the class story to another class or possibly at an assembly.

ICT Outcomes:

  • The students will have learned how to use the digital camera.
  • The students will have observed and participated in putting together a photostory using the Photostory 3 software.  This would include transferring pictures from the camera to the computer, importing pictures, adding text, music, etc.

The Plan:

  • The students will draw a picture of an animal.
  • The students will photograph their picture using the digital camera.
  • Since this is our first experience I will transfer the pictures from the camera to the computer.  I will do this using the data projector so the students can follow along with the steps required to do this.
  • Together, as a class, the students will be shown how to import pictures, add text, music, etc. again using the data projector so they can follow along.
  • The students will each be given the opportunity to add narration to their picture.

The E. Portfolio Product Produced:

  • A class photostory of animals.

Here is a sample of the photostory we made on animals:

Great site! I love the abcteach website too. The animal stories on photo story3 sounds like a lot of fun to do as well as to view for the student on the computer. Motivates me to want to do the same.
